Close to 1 million people will descend on Rio de Janeiro to celebrate the Rio Carnival.  This famous celebration will really begin about 10 days before its official start with parties in the streets. Seven days after the beginning of the Carnival the city will host the popular Samba School  parade at the Sambadrome. The party continues locally with neighborhood concerts and balls until the final day before Lent also known as Fat Tuesday.
